University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center
The University Hospital is a 569 bed Level I trauma center that serves as the tertiary referral center for Lexington, the eastern half of Kentucky, and border regions of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. The facility includes a state-of-the-art emergency department, 100-bed intensive care facility (divided among medicine and surgical specialties), the UK Children’s Hospital, the UK Birthing Center, the UK Gamma Knife Center, and the Markey Cancer Center.
The majority of ophthalmology resident time in the University Hospital is spent in the UK Outpatient Surgical Center, inpatient consults and emergency department.
Kentucky Clinic for Advanced Eyecare
Residents spend roughly two-thirds of their time in training in the eye clinic. The Eye Clinic is an outpatient facility that opened in March of 2017. Covering 44,000 square feet of the entire top two floors of the Shriner’s Building, the clinic includes 52 state of the art universal exam rooms and equipment, 2 procedure rooms, badge-restricted faculty and resident offices, resident library, dedicated clinical research offices, wetlab and pathology rooms with an EyeSi surgical simulator. Faculty and residents treat over 40,000 patients at this location each year.
Veterans Affairs Medical Center
This facility is a modern 346-bed facility of which the majority of time is spent in the Veterans Eye Clinic. This clinic includes 7 fully furnished ophthalmology examination rooms, 3 technician work-up lanes, two fully equipped laser rooms for YAG and argon laser treatment, a resident work-room including desk and computer access for all residents, a business office and a resident’s lounge. The clinic is staffed by three to four residents and an intern at all times throughout the year. The majority of surgical training during the residency is performed while on the VA rotation. Faculty and residents treat over 8,000 patients at this location each year.
This facility is a 383-bed community-based tertiary hospital that also serves as a tertiary referral center for Lexington and the eastern half of Kentucky. Second and third-year residents share rotation time at this facility while on the Cornea and External Disease rotation. The time at this facility is divided between clinical patient care in a private practice setting and surgical exposure in the newly completed Outpatient Surgical Center. Faculty and residents treat over 6,000 patients at this location each year.
Good Samaritan Hospital is an acute-care facility with 302 licensed beds located less than one mile from the Ophthalmology Clinic. Residents cover emergency department and inpatient consults from this hospital.
Throughout various subspecialty rotations, residents have the opportunity, but not the responsibility, to travel with faculty to various community clinics throughout the Commonwealth. These are all faculty that primarily practice at our main clinic who choose to spend time at locations elsewhere in the state to allow better access for geographically and financially challenged patients. The clinic schedules are adjusted such that faculty and residents typically leave Lexington between 7-8am and arrive back home by 5pm. This is an opportunity to experience a private practice environment in an academic center and enjoy some of the outlying towns and sites in the greater Kentucky area, including the towns of Richmond, Maysville, Corbin, Morehead, London, Nicholasville, Campbellsville, Somerset and Harlan in Kentucky. Faculty and residents treat over 5,000 patients at these locations each year.
